Construction Site

2003. Zadar Forum. Scaffolding system, screen. 6 x 6 x 6 m.

The installation site – Forum in the city of Zadar – underwent several historical transformations. During Roman times it housed a Forum and in Christian times three highly important churches and an episcopal complex were built. Today, it is an open place with yet undefined purpose, its future is a topic of public debates and rumours.
The Construction Site installation is built in the position of the former basilica, more precisely inside of its floor plan. Scaffolding is installed to form a cube, covered with the white screen (commonly used for construction works). The installation appears as a common temporary construction scaffolding, while the purpose of the possible construction work, supposedly taking place inside, remains unknown. The absence of communicated content about the purpose of the construction site leaves a space for citizen's subjective projections, thus furthering the debate.
